GEO vs SEO

SEO earns you a spot on a list. GEO earns you a sentence in an answer. The groundwork overlaps a lot; the scoreboard doesn't.

The biggest change: room for only a few names

A results page shows around ten organic links, and a user who doesn't like the first can scroll. A generated answer usually names three to six options and frames one of them as the place to start. Being seventh in search is a weak result; not being in the answer is no result at all. The explainer lets you feel the difference.

What carries over from SEO

  • Crawlability. Search-first assistants retrieve pages. If search engines struggle with your site, AI retrieval will too.
  • Content that answers the question. Helpful, specific pages are what both systems want.
  • Reputation. Links and mentions from trusted sites help rankings, and the same sites feed AI training data and retrieval.

What's new in GEO

  • Quotability. Passages that answer directly in the first sentence or two are easier for a model to lift. See answer engine optimization.
  • Unlinked mentions count. A model learns from text, not only from links. Being discussed by name in the right places matters even without a backlink.
  • Measurement is statistical. You track a mention rate across many answers, not one position. The AI visibility guide explains why.

One query, two ways to lose

“best invoicing app for freelancers”

  1. 1Review site: "Best invoicing apps"
  2. 2Brand A pricing page
  3. 3Forum thread: "What do you use?"
  4. 4Brand B homepage
  5. 5Your homepage
  6. 6Brand C blog post
  7. 7Comparison: A vs B
  8. 8Brand D homepage
  9. 9News article
  10. 10Directory listing

Ranking fifth still puts your link on the page. The visitor can scroll to it, and three of the other results (the review, the forum, the comparison) might mention you too.

Questions

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?
SEO aims to rank pages in a list of search results. GEO aims to get a brand named and cited inside an answer that an AI writes. SEO measures positions and clicks; GEO measures how often, how early and how favourably you are mentioned across many generated answers.
Should I stop doing SEO and focus on GEO?
No. Search-first assistants find pages through web search, so good SEO is what gets you into the pile they read. Think of GEO as extra work on top: quotable content, third-party mentions and consistent brand descriptions.
Is GEO just a new name for SEO?
Partly. Much of the groundwork (crawlable pages, clear content, reputation) is shared. What is new is that the output is a synthesised answer with room for only a few names, and that part of what a model says comes from training data rather than live pages.
